Concerns have been raised regarding new legislative proposals that could significantly restrict the disclosure of information during criminal proceedings, potentially infringing upon whistleblower rights. Journalists argue that the proposed amendments to the penal code, aimed at criminalising the disclosure of information from investigative or evidentiary actions, would effectively silence crucial sources necessary for upholding media freedom.
The proposals, introduced by the Government, threaten imprisonment of up to three years for offences related to the disclosure of such information. The head of Croatia’s journalists’ association, reportedly condemned the amendments as “a brutal aggression against the journalistic profession and public interests.”
Following mounting criticism, the Government proposed an amendment to exempt journalists from liability where there was an โoverriding public interest.โ This was declared by some a public victory however concerns remained for the โlight versionโ which was still considered โdangerous.โ
It was reported that hundreds of journalists took to the streets to protest the Bill urging the Government to abandon the reforms altogether.
