The Minister of Justice of Malta has announced that new amendments to the whistleblowing protection framework are underway, as reported in the national press.

The EU Directive on whistleblowing must be fully transposed into Maltese national law before the 17 December 2021. Malta has had a whistleblowing law since 2013 but reform is needed in order to bring protection in line with the Directiveโ€™s minimums standards.

Malta has until now been considered as having not started the implementation process; despite previous statements of government officials earlier this year, public consultation on the proposed reforms has not yet been started.
