A new minister of justice has been appointed in Slovenia by the National Assembly. In a hearing which took place last week, he was quoted as stating that, as far as he was aware, a proposal to transpose the EU Directive on Whistleblowing is already being prepared by the ministry and he will strive to ensure that the draft law is passed before the 17 December 2021 deadline.
Transparency International Slovenia, who have been monitoring the transposition of the Directive and campaigning for comprehensive reforms to strengthen whistleblower protection, will send representations to the new minister requesting to open the drafting process to enable civil society experts to contribute to the development of the proposal and emphasising the importance of a quality implementation. The importance of effective legal protection has been highlighted by the most recent results of the TI Global Corruption Barometer which found that 66% of Slovenes fear retaliation for reporting corruption – the third-highest proportion of EU countries.
