Greece has adopted a new whistleblower protection law.
The legislation was adopted to transpose the EU Directive on Whistleblowing (2019/1937) into national law. Greece is the eleventh country to adopt legislation to implement the Directive.
Nikolas Leontopoulos, the co-founder of Reporters United, says:
“The adoption of the law came one full year after the official deadline for transposition but the real problem is that the Greek government failed to consult with any of the relevant stakeholders in the field. The result is a weak law that falls short of real, extensive, and inclusive protection for whistleblowers”
The European Commission has begun infringement proceedings against many of the 27 Member States which have not adopted laws before the 17 December 2021 deadline.
