A new whistleblower protection law has been adopted by Parliament. The House of Representatives passed the legislation which intends to transpose the ground-breaking EU Directive on Whistleblowing into national law 49 to one.

Cyprus becomes the sixth country to introduce a new transposition law following Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, Malta and Lithuania. The deadline for the Directive to be fully transposed was the 17 December.

Justice Minister Stefi Drakou addressed the delays in a radio broadcast last week calling the reforms a โ€˜great startโ€™ in the fight against corruption in Cyprus. MP Irini Charalambides who has been working to strengthen whistleblower protection in the country was said to be pleased with the new law after concerns raised regarding a previous draft of the proposal were said to leave whistleblowers vulnerable. Experts will now analyse Cyprus’ new framework in compliance with the standards required by the Directive and emerging international best practice on whistleblower protection.
