Member of Parliament Irene Charalambidou (AKEL) has called for stronger whistleblower protection in a recent publicised speech stating:
‘…we have to wait when the EU Directive will come, in order to complement (the governmental law proposal) and proceed… But why? When all the European countries are adopting mechanisms for the protection of whistleblowers because it is the only way to fight corruption. Do we want to fight corruption or we just want to say that we want to fight corruption? Is there political will or there is not? We have to prove it. And the first step is to ensure the real protection of whistleblowers through adopting all necessary safety valves for their safety.’
The Ministry of Justice and Public Order began preparatory work on the transposition of the EU Directive on Whistleblowing (2019/1937) in April 2020 but not much is known about the process.
