A new whistleblowing law has received approval in the relevant Parliamentary committee in Cyprus and will be passed to the Assembly – a vote on the government Bill is expected to on 20 January 2022 when the new legislation will be officially adopted.

Whistleblowing legislation has been under discussion in Cyprus for many years. The new Bill will transpose the EU Directive on Whistleblowing just over one month short of the 17 December 2021 official deadline. The adoption of the law will make Cyprus the sixth country out of 27 EU Member States to introduce new legislation to implement the Directive.

There has been little publicly available information on the drafting of the current Bill. Media reports in November stated that early discussions were underway.  NGOs Transparency International and the Whistleblowing International Network have highlighted the delay of EU Governments adopting the new rules and the lack of transparency and inclusivity in the process.
