The EU Commission has once again urged the Greek Government to integrate the EU Directive on whistleblowing into national law after two journalists were prosecuted over the Novartis scandal.

The Vice-President of the EU Commission, Vฤ›ra Jourovรก, said:

“As guardian of the Treaties, the Commission will take all necessary measures to ensure the effective enforcement of the directiveOn 28 January 2022, the Commission addressed a letter of formal notice to Greece for failure to communicate the measures taken to transpose the Directive by the deadline of 17 December 2021.”

However, MEP Stelios Kouloglou informed Jourovรก not only had the deadline been missed, but much of the preparatory work was also incomplete:

โ€œThe relevant parliamentary committee has not completed its work, and public consultation with civil society and stakeholders has not progressed.โ€

The Directive should have been fully transposed by all 27 EU member states by 17 December 2021. The Commission has now begun infringement proceedings against most EU countries for this delay.
