Anti-corruption NGO Transparency International (TI) Portugal has officially joined a regional EU-funded initiative aimed at enhancing protections for whistleblowers across Europe.

TI Portugal will play a key role in the “Strengthening and Fostering Enabling Environment for Whistleblowers in the European Union” (SAFE for Whistleblowers) programme, an initiative supported by the European Union and coordinated by the Transparency International Secretariat. The project involves collaboration with TI chapters from the Czech Republic, France, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Slovakia.

In a press release on its website, TI Portugal highlighted its commitment to addressing specific vulnerabilities within whistleblower protection frameworks:

“The SAFE for Whistleblowers project will pay particular attention to the situation of women and other groups at risk of discrimination. The power imbalance between whistleblowers and those who may try to silence them is already a problem, and the intersection with unequal power relations and other inequalities experienced by women and other vulnerable workers, such as LGBT+, migrants, temporary workers, and low-wage workers, needs to be further explored and taken into account by all stakeholders involved in the implementation of whistleblowing legislation.”

The SAFE for Whistleblowers programme aims to strengthen legal and institutional mechanisms to safeguard whistleblowers and ensure they can report wrongdoing without fear of retaliation.
