A new draft law on whistleblower protection has been issued in Slovakia. The new legislation is proposed to transpose the 2019 EU Directive on whistleblowing which required all 27 EU member states to implement a robust minimum standard whistleblowing framework by 17 December 2021.
Teraz.sk reported that under the new law, an employer could be subject to a penalty of up to 100,000 euros if they breach the new rules, such as revealing the identity of a confidential whistleblower.
Zuzana Dlugoลกovรก, the head of Slovakiaโs Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers โ which has handled 80 cases in the past 12 months – was quoted in the media saying:
“If we take a large company with millions of turnovers, the twenty-thousand-dollar fine for possible bullying of a whistleblower may not even be noticed,”
It has been reported that the new law can be read here has been proposed to enter into force on 1 December 2022 with some provisions later in May 2023.
